Fall into health….with a simple seasonal detox

It seems that fall is here officially – whether we want it or not! As the leaves start to change, and the temperature drops, we start to think of the transition into colder months ahead.
Fall is a wonderful time to cleanse –  to shift from the expansive energy of summer into the shorter introspective days of winter. There are some simple lifestyle practices that can help prepare us for this transition, body and mind. A fall “detox” focuses on boosting the immune system, and taking stock of stress levels – to avoid the burnout that usually happens in November and around the holidays.
The following are some simple diet and lifestyle based strategies that are wonderfully effective for gently cleansing our body & mind.  I will be leading a Community Fall Detox Program at my Mississauga practice, and we will all be practicing the following for 2 weeks:
  • A simplified diet, free from refined sugars, gluten, dairy products, and alcohol.
  • Emphasis on eating seasonal foods & produce; squash, chard, dark leafy greens, brussel sprouts, apples & pears, and whole grains like oats, millet and quinoa. Clean protein like fish, poultry, beans and legumes are also emphasized.
  • Focus on hydration (8-10 glasses of water/day), and cutting out the caffeine. A simple mug of warm lemon and ginger water is very detoxifying and energizing – not to mention great for your immune system!
  • Ensuring 7-8 hours of sleep every night – and committing to a regular bed-time and wake-up time.
  • Daily movement and time spent outdoors.
  • Commitment to an additional  daily self-care practice, such as abdominal massage, castor oil packs, or dry skin brushing.

It is equally important to take care of our mind when we cleanse – it really is a time to slow down when we can, and take stock of the balance in our lives.  I have found the following “Health Wheel”, courtesy of Dr. Aviva Romm, very helpful for myself and my clients.  Spend at least a few minutes taking note of what is on your plate – and what might be missing….

Total detox and health wheel

I have always felt like the fall is a time for new beginnings, renewed intentions.  A little reflection and self-care now can help keep you healthy, happy and energized as we head into winter.
